Ceremony
We've all seen dozens of wedding ceremonies on TV and in the movies: Wagner's Bridal Chorus begins (Here Comes the Bride), the minister says "Dearly beloved," and after the usual I do's, ring exchanges, lots of tears and one "I pronounce you man and wife," the beaming couples begin their happily ever afters. Many wedding ceremonies follow this pattern, but they can also be as unique and individual as the couples themselves.

If you're planning a Maine wedding, there are a few legal requirements to be aware of. Maine residents must go to their town office together for a marriage license. If you live in different towns, you need not go to both. Fill out the application, present your identification, pay the fee, then pick up the license (the waiting period no longer applies). If neither of you are from Maine, you may apply for a license in any town. The license is good for 90 days for a ceremony in any town in Maine. Give your license to the officiant, and after the ceremony you and your new spouse will both sign the license in the presence of the officiant and two witnesses, who will also sign the license. The officiant will then file the license with the appropriate town.

Maine weddings can be officiated by ordained ministers, clerics, and other persons licensed to preach, as well as Maine Notaries. If you are Maine resident, you may also choose a judge or justice or a lawyer admitted to the Maine Bar as your officiant.

Other than these legal requirements for Maine weddings, your ceremony can be as traditional or as inventive as you wish. Not only is this the time when you make your "legal contract" with your spouse-to-be, it's also your public proclamation of your love and commitment to each other. Make it memorable for yourselves and your guests by adding elements that reflect who you are.

Here are some ideas for ways you can make your wedding ceremony personal and memorable:
  • Many couples write their own vows; if you are a musician, you might sing your vows, or write a song for your spouse-to-be and perform it during the ceremony.
  • Choose to share readings or songs that have special meaning to you or to your families.
  • Have the ceremony in a special place; museums and galleries are non-traditional options that have gained popularity in recent years.
  • Others choose to get married outdoors, or in unusual locations such as in a balloon or skydiving.
  • Still others reflect their wedding theme in the ceremony itself as well as at the reception; a beach party theme is one example.
